HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A 16-year-old is charged in the shooting death of his cousin after a gun he was trying to disassemble went off, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said.

On June 30, HCSO said deputies responded to the shooting at a home in the 17200 block of Dark Cavern Ct. When they arrived, deputies said 16-year-old Joseph Kelly-Holloway was found with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but died from his injury over a week later, on July 10, the sheriff's office said.

Homicide detectives said the victim's cousin, also 16 years old, was trying to disassemble a handgun when it discharged, hitting the victim.

The cousin, who is not being identified because of his age, is now charged with manslaughter in connection with Kelly-Holloway's death and was booked into the Harris County Juvenile Center.
